Rolex Submariner 5512 (Circa 1979) – Pre-Owned
The Rolex Submariner 5512, produced in 1979, is a highly regarded piece in the history of the Submariner collection. This model was the first to feature crown guards, a defining feature that continues to be seen in all modern Submariners. The reference 5512 is notable for its chronometer-certified movement (COSC), which sets it apart from the non-COSC 5513 model, making it a more precise and higher-end option at the time.
This vintage piece is in excellent condition for its age, with a case that shows honest wear, including some light polishing. The caseback is clearly stamped with “5512,” and the serial and reference numbers are visible. The bezel has aged to a distinctive dark grey hue, with the insert remaining in good condition and exhibiting signs of use. The pip on the bezel has been replaced, but the overall look maintains its charm.
The dial, which is in great shape with a slight patina, features the “Maxi” dial with larger lume plots that give it a unique and collectible appeal. The lume has developed a beautiful eggshell color, with the hands showing only light patina. The dial’s four lines of text, a signature of the 5512, further highlight its special status in the Submariner lineup.
This timepiece also features a solid-link Oyster bracelet in stainless steel, with minimal stretch and wear. The bracelet is fitted with a 93150 clasp, stamped “RS4,” indicating it was replaced in 2010.
The 5512 is a cult favorite among collectors, and this example, being from the final year of production, with its iconic “Maxi” dial and overall condition, makes it an excellent addition to any collection.
